   About Jext

 Jext 5.0 for J2SE 5.0 !

No, this is not a joke, Jext 5.0, its sources and the WebStart version are available. This special release is a new development branch I've created for those of you who use J2SE 5.0 aka "Tiger". Note that this release can run previous J2SE and may break some plugins. This new release also provides a brand new look and feel based upon Karsten Lentzsch work. The new icons are from Eclipse and therefore subject to its license.

Jext 5.0

 A free source code editor

Jext is a free (as in free speech, covered by the GPL licence) source code editor written in Java. You can download it, use it, modify it, redistribute it... your choice, your freedom.

 Deeper in the beast

Jext was created to support Java programming language. But nowadays it can edit many other types of source codes. Among them you'll find C, C++, C#, ASP, PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby, TeX, XHTML, XSLT, Eiffel, JSP... Besides it provides advanced features to ease you work. Manage your projects with the bookmarks tool, categorize your opened files through workspaces, directly open zipped files, get a file straight from the Internet, mail your source code, executes system commands within the internal console, type faster thanks to HyperTyper and to the customizable code snippets library, add new features with plugins, discover the advanced editing capabilities, use the internal Python interpreter... Jext meets all your needs ! Developers will also appreciate the open architecture of Jext. Based on GPLed libraries, internal Python interpreter and many XML files, improving Jext is an easy job. You can even write your own plugins (in Python or Java). Just join us.

 I'm out :-)

Hello everyone, it is Romain GUY speaking. I've created Jext exactly five years ago and had very good time maintaining it. But it is time for me to quit. I'd like to warmly thank all the people who helped me all along (and particularily Paolo Giarusso, who did incredible job those last months, and Slava Pestov, who'll know why) as well as every single person who took the time to download Jext. But let's be honnest, I'm not any more motivated by this project. There hasn't been any interesting release (at least by me) for eons. So, if you're motivated, quite accustomed to Open Source/Free Software development and whishing to improve Jext, just contact me. Jext needs a new co-leader (the other one being Paolo).

I'm a bit sad abandonning this tool and its users but I have many other things to do. Unfortunately I have no other that big software project, apart from progx.org, but I contribute to Open Source/Free Software projects from time to time. And I got my jobs and my studies too.

By the way, I'll keep the owning of the jext.org domain since it is my primary mail address for years. I'll still pay for this domain in the future and handle it ;-)

Syntax colorizing : major changes incoming

Thanks to Slava Pestov, a major change will occur very soon in Jext. In next releases, syntax colorizing support will be based on external XML files rather than internal Java engines. It will allow users to easily create their very own supports.

Plugin Decalco 1.1

The Decalco plugin, which lets you display a nice picture in Jext background (see the fun section of our screenshots galeries if you're interested in), now allows you to give the picture a position.
You can thus put it on the left, on the right or center it horizontally. In the same way, you can put it on top, bottom or center it vertically. Thanks to Pascal Abaziou for his hack.

Windows users

Jextcontext 1.2, provided by Leonard Schmidt, allows any Windows user to easily associate files to Jext. There is a nice readme and a much nicer .reg file to achive this. Go and download it at http://www.tollpatch.de/jextcontext.jar.

Donators

For a few weeks, a few people donated a few money through Paypal. I'd like to thank them for this and for supporting free software (I also thank every single Jext user anyway :-).
